The Pfizer vaccine was formally approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2021 and was the first vaccine to be federally approved to treat COVID-19.

Researchers began by taking the RNA-based genetic sequence of COVID-19 and turned it into DNA. Doing so allowed them to identify the steps necessary to create the spike protein. Once the spike protein was created, researchers could then engineer corresponding synthetic mRNA to put into their vaccines.

After you receive your vaccination, your body is left with T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that have the capability to fight off the virus should you become infected.

Generally, it takes a few weeks for your body to fully produce these T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes, so it is still possible to get infected with COVID-19 during this period. It is recommended that you take precautions while you allow your body to produce these “memory cells.”

While your body is building up immunity, it can cause varying side effects. Although you may have to deal with these side effects, it’s a normal sign that your body is working to strengthen that immunity.
